Census Records for Napa CountyOriginal records are not the most accurate or easy to read documents. I have tried to make these transcriptions as accurate as possible. I am still proof reading these pages so should you find any errors in these pages, please bring them to my attention. Even if information was thought to be inaccurate, I left it as written in the original census records and made a note to that in the remarks column.
1850 U.S. Census - Complete
1852 California State Census
In 1852, California took its only state census. This census is especially valuable because it states the "previous residence" of each person.
According to the California State Library website:
"This special California state census for 1852, the only census taken by the State of California, has been copied and indexed by the Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, California Chapter. They placed one copy in the State Library. A microfilm copy of the DAR transcription is available for use in the State Library and on interlibrary loan. There are a series of indexes to the transcription organized by county or groups of counties, and they are included on the microfilm. NOTE: despite published information to the contrary, there are no special California population schedules for 1855, 1865, 1875, etc. A few special local censuses were done for statistical reasons, but they do not provide access by name, nor were they done for the entire State. We do not have those censuses."
The original census manuscripts as well as the DAR typescript and index are available on microfilm at the California State Library in Sacramento and at Family History Centers. The Family History Library microfilm numbers that include Napa County are 909230 (original manuscript) and 558285 (DAR typescript and index).
